A record month, with an important qualification

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported 350,536 new UK car registrations in September 2026, up 12.0% from September 2025. Within that total, 99,201 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered, representing 28.3% of the monthly market and growth of 36.3% year on year.

Monthly performance is not annual performance

September's results reflect a major registration month in the UK calendar. The year-to-date perspective is more revealing: between January and September 2026, 454,947 BEVs were registered, up 30.2% year on year, with a 26.16% market share. Both records matter, but they answer different questions about demand.

The changing mix of propulsion

Plug-in hybrids also expanded sharply in September: SMMT recorded 59,571 PHEV registrations, compared with 38,308 a year earlier. Petrol still accounted for 131,864 new registrations. The market is electrifying, but buyers continue to select different technologies and price points.

What this means for manufacturers

For manufacturers, the challenge is no longer limited to bringing new EV models to market. Competitive pricing, finance offers, delivery capability and an understandable ownership proposition are increasingly important. Rapid registration growth can reflect attractive incentives as well as underlying consumer preference; public headline figures alone cannot separate those effects.

The StratumEV view

The opportunity for the UK market is to convert strong registration months into durable adoption. That requires evidence on charging access, total ownership cost and the experience of private buyers, fleets and used-car customers. We will track monthly momentum alongside year-to-date shares rather than treating one exceptional month as a definitive verdict.
